Can The Nemechek Protocol benefit persons with migraine or cluster headaches?

Yes. The Nemechek Protocol for Autonomic Recovery is designed to reduce elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and the presence of abnormally primed M1- microglia. These 2 pathological processes prevent recovery from brain injury, interfere with neuronal/synaptic pruning, interfere with brain development in utero, and are a key feature of the neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS). It is capable of reversing a wide range of chronic neurological conditions (migraine and cluster headaches, chronic fatigue, generalized anxiety, depression/PTSD, ADD/ADHD) as well as intestinal disorders (heartburn, reflux, IBS, constipation, diarrhea, etc.), and it’s potent anti-inflammatory effect substantially reduces symptoms associated with autoimmune disorders (Crohn’s, psoriasis, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s, etc.)

What effect and how soon should we expect after starting on midodrine?

Midodrine is a medication used to boost blood pressure. Although it becomes effective within 1-2 hours, it can sometimes take a week for parents to accurately if it is beneficial for their child. Typically, the child may become more alert, more responsive, less hyper, less anxious, or less hungry.

What are Microglia?

Microglia are a population of special white blood cells that only live in the brain and they are involved in the normal pruning of neurons during the developmental process and the repair of neurons after injury. Unfortunately, bacterial overgrowth can alter the behavior of microglia that will lead to a recurrence of cumulative brain injury if the protocol is stopped.

Is there anything I can do to increase or restore my child’s intestinal bacteria (microbiome) back to normal?

Unfortunately not. Our understanding of the loss of unique bacterial species over the last 100 years is still in its infancy. The vast majority of everyone on the planet is believed not to have the full range of bacteria our ancestors had 100 or more years ago.nnWhile the consumption of probiotics or fermented foods might lessen some digestive symptoms, they do not provide the specific bacteria required within the intestinal microbiome. Even if a particular probiotic contained a unique species that historically was part of our microbiome, swallowing the bacteria will not result in the bacteria becoming a permanent part of the microbiome. Usually, the probiotic species disappears once the probiotic stops. FMT (fecal microbiome transplant) can lead to an increase in species within the intestinal tract but only partially. The use of FMT does not prevent the development of bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), the primary pathological defect in autism and developmental disorders.

What are the doses for Mestinon?

Mestinon dosing should be determined by your prescribing physician.

Will the protocol work for someone who is diagnosed as mentally retarded?n

Yes, of course. Individuals with severe intellectual impairment can still be affected by bacterial overgrowth, and autonomic dysfunction. The mental retardation can potentially have its origin in developmental delay that could improve with this protocol as can other forms of neurological delay.

Why does my daughter’s behavior worsen just before and during menstruation?

A common effect of a concussion is an injury to the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that results in a decreased ability to properly pressurize the flow of blood through the brain and is referred to as cerebral hypoperfusion. Along with the ANS, progesterone levels in women also contribute to the pressurization and proper blood flow within the brain. nnJust before menstruation, progesterone levels begin declining, and if the ANS is healthy and free of injury, it can compensate for the declining pressure from less circulating progesterone. But if the ANS is injured and unable to fully compensate for the declining brain blood pressure, the lower than normal brain pressure can trigger more anxiety, aggression, hyperactivity, and worsening focus.n

Why does my child have meltdowns?

Frequent emotional “meltdowns” are often due to one of two common mechanisms in children with autism and, as such, can be broken down into two recognizable patterns. The first meltdown pattern occurs when the child is simply sitting and without, and provocation slowly becomes emotionally distraught. This pattern results from the inability to maintain blood pressure and might happen when the child is forced to sit still (sitting in a car seat) or has gone without food or drink for a while (liquids, salt, and carbohydrates boost blood pressure).nnThe second pattern of meltdowns is often referred to as a transition issue. The child becomes distraught when irritated by an unwanted change in their current activity. This pattern is similar to road rage in adults and is covered in great detail in the second edition of our book.

Does melatonin interfere with this protocol?

Using melatonin seems generally safe. Once they’re sleeping well, try to eliminate its use.

Can I use medical marijuana alongside the protocol?

Medical marijuana is not necessary for my protocol to help your child. Because of unreliable quality and content issues, I don’t recommend using it. This is the same quality concern I have with supplements and EVOO.
